Penn State started their 2008 campaign today with a 66-10 win over Coastal Carolina. I don't understand why the Nittany Lions have these guys on their schedule while Illinois is playing Missouri and Michigan is playing Utah. Maybe the schedule will gain some strength in a few years.
Anyway it looks like Darryl Clark did a good job managing this offense and I think he went untouched throughout the game. We finished with 594 total yards, 334 on the ground and 260 through the air. Alot of respect for our offensive line today. Clark finished the game going 11/14 for 146 yards and one TD. Evan Royster had 64 yards and 3 td's while his counterpart Stephfon Green went for 89 and 2. Derrick Williams did what we expect him to do as he ran a kickoff back 89 yards for a score after the Chanticleers scored their touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Jordan Norwood led the receivers with 74 yards and a trip to the end zone.
On the defensive side of things our line looked great against this Championship Subdivision team. We limited them to 52 yards on the ground and they relied on short passes to avoid the sacks. The defense surrendered 198 yards through the air to give up and even 250 on the day. The line got to the CC quarterbacks 4 times during the game and had only one takeaway, an interception by Bani Gbadyu. I think this squard will improve next week when they get tested by the wideouts and playmakers of Oregon State.
Overall it was everything I thought it would be. We dominated the line of scrimmage and ran all over them, throwing only to show that we could. Defensively I think Tom Bradley just played some basic packages, saving the good stuff for the good teams.
Coming up: Next weekend we play Oregon State in Happy Valley, kickoff is slated for 3:30. The Beavers opened their season with a loss to Stanford. They showed that they had some big playmaking wide receivers and a good amount of speed. They had 3 turnovers and gave up 210 yards on the ground. I look for us to once again run the football very well and get pressure on their QB's to make them have some mistakes. This team has talent, they just need to piece it together. Should be an easy victory for the Lions. My prediction is the Lions to take control early and finish it with a score of 38-20.
In other news the Buckeyes beat Youngstown St. today with ease, but had a scare when their star RB, Beanie Wells left with a foot injury. I guess he's fine and ended up with over 100 yards on the day. Michigan lost another season opener, this time to Utah. The Utes controlled them for the first 3 quarters before Michigan put up 13 in the final frame to end the game at 25-23. Northwestern beat the Syracuse Orange 30-10, we'll see both of those teams later this year.
Well that sums it up for now! Hope you enjoy the stats and my take on things!!
